Dr. Paul Kaldjian is Professor Emeritus, Department of Geography & Anthropology at University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where he has taught since 2002. A human and cultural geographer, he specializes in global cultures, food geography, and the Middle East and North Africa, and regularly leads student immersion experiences abroad.
Before entering academia, Dr. Kaldjian worked with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on national environmental policy and waste reduction initiatives. He later earned his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Arizona after earlier degrees from University of Michigan.
With a rich multicultural background—Finnish and Armenian—Dr. Kaldjian brings a global perspective shaped by research and extended stays in places like Turkey and Finland. His work explores how culture, place, and perception shape human experience.
At this year’s Syttende Mai celebration, Dr. Kaldjian will present “Myth, Meme, or Meliorism? Understanding Nordic Happiness,” offering insight into the ideas and realities behind the Nordic region’s reputation for well-being.
